Heritage Trail Metro Park, located at 7262 Hayden Run Road in Hilliard, Ohio, is an 87-acre park that offers a blend of natural beauty and historical significance.

History

The Heritage Rail Trail traces the route of the old Columbus, Piqua, and Indiana Railroad, which started construction in the mid-1800s. The first train rolled through Pleasant Valley (now Plain City) on July 4, 1853. Over time, the railroad changed hands multiple times, being leased to the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1921 and later to Penn Central in 1968, before the tracks were abandoned in 1984.

In the early 1990s, the Heritage Rail-Trail Coalition was formed to convert the abandoned railway into a public trail. With fundraising and support from local governments, the first mile of the trail opened in 1995, with more sections added in the following years. Eventually, the trail was handed over to Franklin County Metro Parks, which now oversees the Heritage Trail Metro Park.
