Shallenberger State Nature Preserve covers approximately 88 acres of protected land in Fairfield County, Ohio. The preserve is located about 4 miles southwest of downtown Lancaster, Ohio, so it’s just a short drive. The address is:

How Shallenberger Nature Preserve Came to Be:
Jay M. Shallenberger, the original owner and guardian of the area, wanted it preserved while remaining open for Ohioans to enjoy and learn from. After his death in 1971, the Fairfield County Commissioners inherited the land and, in early 1973, transferred it to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. On May 15, 1973, it was officially dedicated as a scenic state nature preserve, now managed by the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.
Geological History:
Over 300 million years ago, this part of Ohio lay beneath a vast inland sea, where streams carried sand into massive deltas. Over time, the sand hardened into what we now know as Black Hand sandstone. Long after the sea disappeared, wind, water, and temperature carved the rock into gorges, overhangs, cliffs, waterfalls, and rock shelters, with the Hocking Hills being the most famous example.
At Shallenberger, these forces shaped Allen Knob, a 240-foot sandstone peak with sweeping views of the central Ohio plains, and the smaller Ruble Knob. The landscape also shows signs of the last ice age, when glaciers over a mile thick reached just northwest of here. While the tops of the knobs likely stayed ice-free, their bases were buried under glacial debris called an end moraine. The thin, rocky, nutrient-poor soils atop the knobs support plants like chestnut oak, mountain laurel, and ferns such as polypody, ebony spleenwort, and walking fern—species more common in the Appalachians—while few other woody plants manage to grow there.
It’s open from half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset. Please stay on designated trails, note that pets are not allowed, and there are no restrooms available.
Hiking Trails:
Shallenberger offers a scenic 1.5-mile loop that winds around and climbs both Allen and Ruble Knobs. The unmarked paths are easy to follow and feature optional side trails leading to viewpoints atop the knobs. The hike is easy to moderate, with some elevation gain along the main loop. Expect uneven terrain with roots and rocks, so boots or sturdy shoes are a good idea. The figure-eight-shaped trail takes you through mixed hardwood forests, past boulder outcroppings, and over gentle to moderately steep slopes. In spring, colorful wildflowers and blooming mountain laurel add extra charm to the walk.
Vista points on Allen Knob offer views west over the Fairfield County countryside, rewarding the climb.
